Bahrain Solar Energy Pilot Project Launched

The Minister of Finance, Minister in Charge of the Oil and Gas Affairs, Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohamed Al-Khalifa, delegated Bapco’s Chairman, Eng. Adel Khalil Al Moayyed, to inaugurate the Bahrain Solar Energy Pilot Project set to open on Wednesday, June 25, 2014, in the presence of His Excellency Dr. Ahmed Ali Al Sharian, NOGA’s Secretary General.

As part of its ongoing efforts to support and implement national initiatives of the Kingdom and in collaboration with the National Oil and Gas Authority (NOGA), the Bahrain Petroleum Company (Bapco) has adopted this initiative to enhance the improvement of the clean energy generation file through the application of solar energy technologies. The project contributes to the establishment of renewed energy industries as part of the national economy in the future, in addition to the creation of job opportunities and a new industry at the domestic market. It also aims to reduce reliance on natural gas.

The project’s detailed design and engineering, procurement and construction works have been completed by Petra Solar of USA. The project has been implemented at a total cost of US$ 27 million. The implementation has commenced since November 2012 on a pilot basis in order to diversify energy sources.

The project is of a pioneering nature in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Its main objective is to implant the belief of shared social responsibility for preserving Bahrain’s environment and fossil resources. The project’s total capacity is equivalent to 5 MW carefully distributed in 3 regions in the Kingdom: the Refinery Plant (3 MW), Awali unit (1.5 MW) and the University of Bahrain (0.5 MW).
